Each plus-size model featured in this column has impacted the fashion world and beyond; however, none of them have been active on social media as Nyomi Nichols-Williams did. In 2020, she will be a star; Nyomi Nicholas-Williams is perhaps most famous for her fight with Instagram (and taking the battle to victory) following an Instagram policy that saw her pictures deleted and censored from the micro-blogging website.

It began with the hashtag #IWantToSeeNyome. Nyomi Nichola-Williams has rightly criticized Instagram after they took down a stunning nude image that Nyomi posted of her. In the photo, Nyomi was covering her naked breasts with her arms.

Infuriated by the decision of her photo, Nyomi went on Instagram, “Millions of pictures of thin, very naked white women are posted on Instagram every single day,” she said. “But the fat black woman who is celebrating her body isn’t allowed? This was shocking to me. I feel like I’m being silenced.”

The movement #IWantToSeeNyome was born.

The issue became more public after the photographer Alex Cameron, and the British activist Gina Martin (who campaigned to make upskirting a crime) made a statement in favor of Nyomi. In October of 2020, Instagram was able to amend its nudity policies – saying it would not be censoring body fats and Black bodies. Nyomi’s picture was also restored on her Instagram account. Nome, Alex, and Gina continue to work hard to stop the censorship of more prominent Black women.

Covers Catwalks, Campaigns, and CollectionsNyome have been working on projects with Adidas, Boots, and Dove.

What is plus-size?

It’s a controversial phrase in certain circles. However, the boundaries are a bit blurred when it comes down to knowing precisely what constitutes a plus-size. The parameters vary from one market to the next. However, in the US, an individual who is a plus-size model is anyone who is over the size of a dress US 12or UK 16.

In the case of Plus size modeling, there’s an array of sizes, likely where it differs the most from straight-size modeling. Plus size or curve models begin at a US size 10-12, with no end to length. At the same time, straight-size models come with a smaller size range that they can fit into. This has resulted in the rise of the terms “mid-size” and “curve,” which are used in a few instances that are often interpreted as something like 8-12 US size, with any above that and the size.

Anna Shillinglaw, the owner of MiLK Model management, has been at the forefront of the plus-size and curve-based fashion model revolution. As a former model, Anna launched her agency in 2011 and has since managed several of the most popular models of plus size (including several on this list). Also, she has witnessed first-hand the transformations in the industry of fashion.

“The industry has definitely seen a big and important shift. More commercial brands are using models of all different sizes and more than ever before we are seeing high-end fashion designers show different body shapes on the runway. We still have a long way to go but I applaud how far we have come.”
