Sweet Letter My Best Friend

Dear amazing friend,

Sometimes when you complain a mistake you made to me, or when you can’t find anything to wear that looks good on you, I’m confused. I’m bewildered because I don’t see anything like that. You’ve got those insecurities I care about because we’re the closest friends so I don’t see them.

To me, I see this amazing person, who daily amazes me. One who is gracious and caring and kind. I see a mother giving her everything— day after day.

And I just wanted to take a second in appreciation of what a blessing you are. To your family, and to me.

You ‘re beautiful, to me.

You mention that you gained 100 pounds. If you don’t get to the gym you are extremely hard on yourself because you’re tired. Wish your belly was flat, and you hate the idea of putting on a bathing suit. One day, you joke to get a boob job because your breasts are deflated from nursing.

I don’t see the things.

I see this powerful body moving through pregnancy , childbirth and nursing. Seeing your smiling, sparkling eyes and good, bright face with how you’re really put together — even in yoga pants and a t-shirt. Something better in spirit than anyone else’s I also see as well as your beauty … inward and outward.

To me you are smart.

Even after my original text I get messages from you. Anything I’ll read out of you like, “My brain is mush! Sorry for the wait! “And I’m always thinking (and feeling) you should never apologize to me like that, because I get it.

I don’t believe things like that.

Because you have great ideas, you can solve problems quickly. You’ve got amazing suggestions and a wealth of great tips from everything on parenting to making up to podcasts. I witness you ‘re articulate and creative, someone who’s always learning, growing, always looking to get better.

You are important to me.

Sometimes you feel powerless because of the chaos that raises little kids. Worried sick, staying up at night wondering if you’re doing something right. You’re so hard on yourself when something goes wrong and you feel overwhelmed, and sometimes even like you’re drowning. Drowning in ‘stuff,’ in requests, in to-do’s, in reminders, in tasks, in, well—motherhood.

Someone who can do all the really important things — and may not always be perfect, may not always be on time — but they get done. And they get done well. I see someone who takes time for themselves when they know they ‘re beyond burnt out. You’ve inspired me to fill up my own cup many times.

You ‘re a wonderful mum to me.

There have been times you told me you feel like you’re failing. Times you’ve felt flat out like a bad mom. You’ve been vulnerable and confessed you didn’t have any idea what to do. That you’re not prepared for some of these motherhood curve balls that are thrown at us.

Okay, to me, looking in from the outside — you’re a really good mum.

You’ve got this thing right and you’ve got beautiful, healthy, caring, loving kids. A friend who is real, brave, putting your heart and soul into this ‘mother’ position and if you ask me—you should wear the title like an honor badge.

You ‘re a good friend to me.

You feel like you’re boring, like you don’t do anything that’s interesting anymore. Like you’re too tired to make plans and go out and do things friends do. Moreover, you feel like you’re not there for me just as much as I need you to be, or you want to be. But, the truth is, you ‘re busy. You’ve got a family to look after and they’re your priority.

You will be my guy forever.

You ‘re always going to be the friend I can go to with anything — at any time. Always, you’re going to make me laugh the hardest. No matter how long it’s been since we’ve spoken on the phone, or how many days have passed since we’ve written, or how many months it’s been since I got a real personal life hug — our friendship will always be strong, loyal and most important — real.

You may also need:

You ‘re quite enough to me.

You can question yourself on a daily basis. Your confidence can sometimes be shaky. You may have decided in your mind to give up on those really funny days. And you may not always believe in yourself.

But I just want to tell you, I believe in you with all my heart.

I respect you. I admire you. I will always be here with you to wind up or solve problems. And I will always be here to lift you up and remind you how wonderful you really are.

So I hope you can stop today, and all days, and take a minute to see yourself through my eyes. Because you’re a woman’s heck. And I’m just happy I know you.

Your friend,
