Brown Discharge During Pregnancy

Healthy discharge comes in a variety of colors, though changes are usually signs that something’s going on inside.

Having a little amount of brown discharge during pregnancy is common and isn’t a big cause for concern, although it can also mean infections, changes in pH or cervix dilation, so you need to be very careful.

For instance

A light discharge in small amounts and with jelly-like consistency is more common in early pregnancy, and less worrying, but a very dark discharge with a strong smell may indicate more severe changes and may not be normal at all.

So in any case like that, the obstetrician should be informed and tests should be done to identify what is causing this symptom and to start treatment as soon as possible.

One of the biggest worries for pregnant women is brown discharge, probably because the color is so close to blood. But the good news is that, in the vast majority of cases some brown discharge is just part of being a woman.

Why that discharge is brown?

Since brown discharge is tinged with old blood.

For instance

Some blood in your uterus took longer to come out, and at that result it gets older and turns brown. That means you end up with either brown spotting or a brownish-colored discharge.

Is it normal to have brown discharge during pregnancy?

The answer is this; it is normal to have brown discharge during pregnancy and very likely does not mean something is wrong with you or your baby. In most cases, it’s completely harmless.

What is the cause of brown discharge during pregnancy?

The most common cause for brown discharge is irritation. The surge of hormones and increased blood flow throughout your body during pregnancy makes the cervix super sensitive, and also, sex during pregnancy or a pelvic exam can aggravate it. That results in a bit of brown discharge or light spotting.

If you are closer to the end of your pregnancy, and still having brown discharge, it could also be a sign that labor is near. A couple of weeks or a few days before you give birth, you’ll lose your mucous plug, which is “a glob of mucus that seals off the opening of the cervix during pregnancy”.

And in the days just before labor, you’ll likely see “bloody show,” or discharge tinged pink or brown with blood, which means your baby’s arrival is near. If you suspect you’re experiencing bloody show, call your health care provider immediately.

What to do when you notice brown discharge

If you notice brown discharge often after sex, it’s more than likely normal, so you just have to make a note of it and use a pant liner for a day or two to avoid stain on your pants.

But, if you notice it after sex more than a few times a month or for a long period of time, and if at any time the discharge is itchy, or has a pungent odor or is accompanied by cramping, kindly contact your doctor, as these could be signs of an infection or other more serious condition.

So to be on a safer side, once you noticed any kind of bleeding, just consult a health care provider for check up. As recommended by the experts.

Self medication for brown discharge during pregnancy

Avoid the use of soaps with moisturizing cream and antibacterial and anti-fungal properties;

Use intimate wash as directed by the gynecologist;

Intimate clothing should be light, loose and cotton;

Avoid the use of softeners or bleach on underwear;

Wash lingerie with mild soap and water;

Avoid the use of pant liners;

Avoid washing the genital area more than twice a day, as this can decrease the natural protection of the mucus of that area.

These precautions can help prevent infections and this way decreases the appearance of vaginal discharge.

Other treatments should be followed according to your health care provider prescribes.

Treatment can be done with the use of anti-fungal medication when the cause is candidiasis, or antibiotics, for example if it’s an STD. But when the discharge is unrelated to any disease, the treatment may be just to rest, avoiding physical active.
