In a significant development for the golfing community, the Genesis Invitational, a PGA Tour event traditionally held at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, has been relocated to Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego due to the devastating wildfires affecting the Los Angeles area. The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 13 to 16, 2025.
The decision to move the event comes in response to the extensive damage and loss of life caused by the wildfires in Los Angeles. The relocation aims to ensure the safety of participants and attendees while supporting the affected communities. The tournament will feature several initiatives focused on relief efforts for fire victims, highlighting the golf community’s commitment to aiding those impacted by the disaster.
Tiger Woods, the host of the Genesis Invitational, expressed his gratitude to the city of San Diego and Torrey Pines for accommodating the event on short notice. Woods, who has a storied history at Torrey Pines, including multiple victories, stated, “We are grateful to the city of San Diego and Torrey Pines for stepping up to host the Genesis Invitational during this challenging time. Our thoughts are with those affected by the wildfires, and we hope this event can provide some relief and support to the community.”
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also commented on the city’s role in hosting the tournament, emphasizing the importance of solidarity during crises. “San Diego stands ready to support our neighbors in Los Angeles. Hosting the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines not only showcases our world-class golf facilities but also underscores our commitment to aiding in the recovery efforts for those impacted by the wildfires,” Gloria remarked.
Torrey Pines Golf Course is renowned for hosting prestigious tournaments, including the U.S. Open, and regularly serves as the venue for the Farmers Insurance Open. The course’s South Course will be utilized for the Genesis Invitational, marking a rare instance of Torrey Pines hosting two PGA Tour events within a short span. Organizers plan to leverage existing infrastructure from recent tournaments to facilitate a seamless transition for the upcoming event.
